Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for February 20 2014

Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for February 20 2014

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting with about a dozen male members in attendance.  The Secret Greeter was Bob Mastek.

It was Bill’s wife’s birthday (Nancy), and we all sang.

Carl S won the 50/50 dollars.  The Quarters draw was Ed – who was not present so it rolls over.

Reminder about the Regional Conference in Kennewick.

Roger reported on the flower delivery fund-raiser for Valentine’s Day.  Kiwanis received $5 for every set of flowers delivered.  It was estimated that the club delivered over 100 sets of flowers (eg, Tony did 31, Carl did 30, and Pat did 25).

Keith proposed that the club purchase a new banner to use on tables at events.  The cost was estimated to be between $100 and $400 depending on what the banner was made out of and what was on it….One member already donated $100 as a challenge.

Bob reported on the Easter Egg Hunt preparations.  The vent is scheduled for April 19th from 9:30 until noon.  Carl will be the bunny again (with a baseball bat for helicopter parents).  Keith noted that the Key Club should place/hide the eggs prior to the event beginning at Salnave Park.

Keith brought up the “Paint a Helmut” fund raiser at the Spokane Fairgrounds on April 26th from 9am – 2 pm.  The POC is Dora at (909) 915-5938.

Our guest speaker was Dr Dave Bunting, Chair of the Economics Department at EWU.   He spoke about the economic impact of EWU on the community.  He produced a study on this issue in 2011.  His approach was: what would happen if EWU was located at Ritzville instead of Cheney?

Some interesting facts that came out included:

-          About half of the student population lives in Cheney, and the other half in Spokane.

-          Student spending each year is around $112 million.

-          Tuition is going up so EWU can afford a higher caliber of instructors.  The goal that EWU is the most affordable university in the state is no longer.

-          The Patterson Hall make-over cost the state $60 million!

The next meeting on February 27 at 7 am.  The next Board meeting is March 3rd at 7 am.

Respectfully,

Steve
