Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for June 5, 2014

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting. He noted we had a half-full house (as usual for an evening meeting).  We discussed reverting the evening meeting back to a morning meeting as more people would be attending.  The experiment did not work.  Almost unanimous opinion that we revert back. 

Bob Mostek won the dollar draw.  The 25-cent draw went to Tony who donated it to Cheney Outreach.

Fred and the Kiwanis Club will also be selling cotton candy during the Rodeo Day Parade on Saturday, July 12^th.  Volunteers still needed for that.

Fred and Keith emphasized the importance of everyone participating in the Child Protection training to be conducted during the June 26 Kiwanis Club meeting.  Please do not miss this meeting!

Keith asked if anyone would be interested in a social event in the park this summer.  More info was requested.

The members asked me to discuss Putin and the Ukraine first.  Lots of interest.  Then, I covered what US policy towards North Korea’s Kim, Jong-Un should be (lots of discussion about Dennis Rodman).  By this time, more than my allotted 30 minutes was used up.  However, the members asked me to continue discussing the 6^th political party realignment.  Keith was very much into this part of the presentation.  The meeting finally ended at 7:15pm!

Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for May 29, 2014

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting. He noted we had a full house (almost 30 people with many guests).  The Secret Greeter was Bill Nations (though he didn’t know it)! 

Margie won the dollar draw.  The 25-cent draw went to Ted Nealy who was not present (so it carries over to the next meeting).

Part 2 of the Kiwanis One Day event is set for tonight at 5:30 pm at the Cheney Care Center – planting lots of flowers.

The Kiwanis Social Outing to the Theater-Dinner is set for May 3^rd.  The show is “Honestly Now.”  If interested, contact Keith.

Fred and the Kiwanis Club will also be selling cotton candy during the Rodeo Day Parade on Saturday, July 12^th.  Volunteers still needed.

Our participation in the Interclub event with the Kiwanis Club in Millwood went well last Tuesday with 5 Cheney Kiwanians participating.

Roger reminded everyone to mark their calendars for 12-14 September when Kiwanis Club will be manning the rest stop on I-90 Eastbound.

Roger wanted to thank the following Kiwanians for helping with the flower deliveries for Mother’s Day.  We raised $500!!

The next Board meeting is Monday, June 2^nd at 7 am.

The next Kiwanis Club meeting is set for June 5^th at 7 pm.  Steve will be the guest speaker addressing any or all three of the articles he recently had published online: Kim, Jong-un, Vladimir Putin, and/or the end of the GOP as we knew it.

We had two sets of guest speakers.  Vice Principal Jeff brought two students as Kiwanis "Students of the Month" representing the CHS drama club: Sarah (the director) and Logan.  The club is performing “Leading Ladies” at the Little Theater for the first time!  However, tonight is the final performance (7:30 pm).  Sarah is off to the College of Idaho, while Logan is off to Southern Oregon University – both majoring in theater.  Very interesting!

Fred brought Mike O’Connor who spoke to us about his business, “The Way of Business,” according to God.  The purpose of this non-profit organization is simply to educate people in Spokane about doing business.  It has been in existence for less than 2 years.

Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for May 22, 2014

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting. The Secret Greeter was Ted! 

Jerry Hilton won the dollar draw.  The 25-cent draw went to Kurt, who asked that the Cheney Museum get it.

I reported that the Golf Tournament is still scheduled for Saturday, June 7.  Previously, I passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteers on the day of the event (only three signed up!).  So, I am still looking for a couple of more volunteers….

Part 2 of the Kiwanis One Day event is set for May 29 at 5:30 pm at the Cheney Care Center – planting flowers.

The Kiwanis Social Outing to the Theater-Dinner is set for May 3^rd.  The show is “Honestly Now.”  If interested, contact Keith.

Cheney Mayfest went on May 16 from 5-9 pm.  Fred sold cotton candy at this event and raised $243!

Fred and the Kiwanis Club will also be selling cotton candy during the Rodeo Day Parade on Saturday, July 12^th.  Volunteers still needed for that, as well.

Our participation in the Interclub event is on Tuesday, May 27, at 7 am with the Kiwanis Club in Millwood.

There is a pizza party planned for May 22^nd at 4:30 pm at the Cheney Care Center.

Fred asked for approval to go to the District meeting to pitch the Mutual of Omaha’s Child Protect program to other Kiwanis clubs.  Of course, everyone agreed.

Instead of the Child Protection Guidelines presentation, Mayor Tom Trulove spoke to the club members about the City of Cheney.  As always, he was very interesting!

-          Highway 904 expansion to 4 lanes is now #2 on the state transportation bill.  However, this bill may not get approved this year.

-          The status of the historic train depot is still undecided.

-          The city may hire a new administrator by July 1^st.

-          The 50-acre park on the east side of town should be completed by the end of the summer.  The city anticipates many tournaments to be hosted there, bringing in revenue for the city and local businesses.

-          There was a discussion about refurbishing the current city pool or to develop a water park.

-          With the 4-lane expansion, prospects for the Industrial Park will improve significantly.   As for the marijuana hydroponics plant, that has little chance of being funded (up front costs are too expensive).

Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for May 8, 2014

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting. The Secret Greeter was Vonice (yet again)!  I was sitting close to her,but not right next to her as in the past. 

Vonice (aka Cheney Outreach) won the 50/50 dollars (yet again!)

It was Kirk’s 64th birthday - and we sang (with vigor!).

The Easter Egg Hunt on April 19^th was a big success.  However, we expended $306 on various items.  On the other hand, we collected $112 in donations during the event!

I reported that the Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 7.  Roger made up several posters to be disseminated by myself and Fred.  I took a couple to the golf course and to the Cheney Federal Credit Union, which is the event corporate sponsor.  I passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteers on the day of the event (only three signed up!).

Tom reported that the Board Meeting went as scheduled, though many people forgot to go.  In any case, the main issue under discussion is reverting the first meeting of the month back to a morning meeting as very few people are attending at night….

The next regular club meeting is Thursday, May 15th at 5:30 pm.  Keith reminded everyone that the meeting on May 22^nd will be only about Child Protection Guidelines.  Everyone needs to attend!

Our guest speaker was Deb Clements, the Cheney School District Superintendent.  Deb was there to talk about the new school building plans coming up over the next few years, beginning with the Cheney High School (CHS). In March, the school district had 4,028 students – which is almost exactly what was projected.  CHS had over 1,200 students (270 in the graduating class).  The high school has no performing arts center, and the cafeteria is far too small.  So, starting in 2015, building will begin to expand the high school significantly.

Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for April 24 2014

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting. The Secret Greeter was Bob Mostek! 

Vonice (aka Cheney Outreach) won the 50/50 dollars.

It was Bill Nation’s birthday - and we sang.

The Pelican draw finally got done –Margie received it again!  It was dressed up as Little Red Riding Pelican.

The Easter Egg Hunt on April 19^th  was a big success.  The EWU fraternities/sororities brought 2,500 stuffed eggs.  So, we now had over 8,500 plastic eggs.  Over 400 kids walked away with around 20 egg’s worth of chocolate each.  Everyone had a great time.  Bob volunteered to run it again next year.

I reported that the Golf Tournament is now scheduled for Saturday, June 7.  It will cost $65 per golfer to include cart and meal catered by Longhorn BBQ.  Chris, the manager at Fairways Golf Course, said he was interested in running the event – to include recruiting golfers , marketing and advertisement.  Fred Pollard is responsible for collecting gifts from Cheney merchants, while I am responsible for getting hole sponsors ($70 each).  We have around 4 paid sponsors to date. 

On behalf of the Kiwanis Club, Keith challenged the CHS leadership (Principal Troy!) for best score during the golf tournament.

Earl, representing the special Olympics, solicited for support making sandwiches.  Fred/Gail volunteered to head up this effort.  At least five Kiwanians indicated they would help out.

Our guest speakers were the April “Students of the Month” from Cheney High School.  Tim Dykstra and Joe Hatzinikolis were introduced by Principal Troy Huette.  They were selected as representatives of CHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA).  Adam Smith is the club advisor for many years.  The club is now the CHS’s largest and most successful club.  Smith won the award for best advisor in the state. This year, many of the club members competed in 63 events at the regional competition in Spokane Valley.  Only the top 5 competitors are invited to compete at the state level in Seattle.  Then, only the top 3 are invited to compete at the national competition held this year in Nashville.  The CHS FBLA Club is sending 25 students to nationals this year!  First place is usually a cash award or a scholarship.

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting. The Secret Greeter was Bill Nation!

The Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for April 19^th .  We now have 6,000 plastic eggs.  The Cheney Care Center folks have stuffed the eggs with candy.  Two EWU fraternities will also be assisting for this event.  We have three gift baskets for each of the 5 age groups (for kids those who find the golden eggs).  Helpers should report to Salnave Park at 9 am.  The weather report is for clouds.

Our first guest speakers were the March “Students of the Month” from Cheney High School.  Kalyn and Anastasia were introduced by Vice Principal Jeff.  They were selected to represent the CHS Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) which has done well in regional, state, and national competitions!  The Club does job training, recycling design, business work, etc.  It also does an annual community service event.  Last year it was to support the March of Dimes.  This year it is supporting the Share a String program.

Our second guest speaker was introduced by Dave Daugherty.  It was Keith Fauerso, the Executive Director of the Cheney Care Center.  Keith gave us a sales pitch hoping that other members besides Dave would soon move in.  The CCC offers assisted living, senior medical services, and retirement housing.

Duplex apartments are around 1,500 square feet and Triplex apartments are 860 square feet.

To join CCC costs $250, and monthly fees are $425 per person, or $450 per couple.

Keith passed out very professional brochure folders to everyone.  He noted that the CCC is the 4^th largest employer in Cheney, and it receives the highest ratings from state inspections.

Dear Kiwanians,

Keith opened the meeting. The Secret Greeter was Vonice (again!)!  Fortunately, I was sitting with her (again!)

It was also Vonice’s birthday (but, she insisted we not sing).

 

Pat won the 50/50 dollars. The quarter draw went to Toony who doated it to Cheney Outreach.

I presented a Key Club report.  They are supporting both our Easter Egg Hunt as well as Paint a Helmut at the Fairgrounds (both events in April).

Keith pushed selling cotton candy at the Rodeo Day Parade on Saturday, July 12, at 11:30.  He is looking for 4 pairs of volunteers to sell the cotton candy.

Duane talked up the “Relay for Life” now being held at the Medial Lake High School on Saturday, May 29 ($10 per person).

Tom made a passionate appeal for new Board members when he assumes the presidency from Keith.

Our first guest speaker was Earl, who is the director of volunteers for the Special Olympics for eastern Washington.  Every year, around 750 special athletes compete at Roos Field at EWU.  This year, the event will be on Saturday, May 3^rd.  To manage this event, there are 200-250 volunteers (to include from CHS and EWU).  Earl appealed to Kiwanis Club to help make the lunches on Saturday morning.  Members believed that Gail Pollard was our POC (probably because she wasn’t at the meeting!).

Our second guest speaker was Earl’s wife, Bonnie.  Bonnie founded “Friends Across Cheney Equal (FACE).  FACE deals with special needs adults.  It is part of the city Parks & Recreation Department.

Our next meeting is April 17^th.
