Kiwanis Club of Cheney - December 4, 2014 meeting notes
The meeting was called to order at 7am by President Tom Whitfield. There were 20 members present plus two guests, our speaker and 5 members of the Spokane Valley club.
Tom won the 50/50 drawing and several birthdays were recognized. Our two guests also submitted member applications.
The Apple pies for the Apple Cup wager were served.
Jeri updated the club on the See's candy delivery and sale next weekend at Cheney Trading Company.
Margie thanked members for bringing guests and reminded us that the membership contest continues through the end of December.
Our speaker was Ken Halpin, the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs at EWU. He spoke about the change from the Eagle Athletic Association to the Eagle Athletic Fund. He explained that the demand for tickets and tailgate spots exceeds supply so there are waiting lists and now points are awarded based on type of donation to help allocate tickets and tailgate spots. He was asked about corporate sponsorships and said that this process has been outsourced but there are face to face meetings with locals to find out what type of sponsorship gives the best benefit to the sponsor. He also talked about the challenge of handling playoff ticket sales -- every seat in the stadium is separately ticketed for a playoff and allocation of tickets has to comply with NCAA rules.

December 18, 2014 meeting notes
The meeting was called to order at 6:55am by President Tom Whitfield and there were 18 members and 8 guests present.
The secret greeter was Tony; we recognized one birthday and Steve won the 50/50 drawing.
Duane Isaac presented the club with a $1000 check from STCU. He tracked his volunteer time for the club and submitted it to generate this scholarship donation.
A new member, John McCallum, was welcomed into the club and spoke briefly about his background and his involvement in West Plains Little League.
Troy Hewett from Cheney High presented the two outstanding students for December. Bradley Powell is active in DECA, FBLA, honor societies, and cheerleading. He plans to attend EWU to study art and business. Trenton Briggs is involved in DECA and recently had the lead in a school play. He plans to attend college in Florida.
Our speaker was Chad Bodnar, head coach of EWU Women's Soccer. He was a coach for 10 years at Walla Walla CC with a strong win record before coming to EWU. This year at EWU they have had 8 wins when the team usually had 3 to 4 wins in a season. He has 15 verbal commitments for next season and a few for the following season. He attributes 80% of team success to recruiting the right students -- he judges character by speaking with other coaches who have worked with the potential player and also checks social medial postings. He is able to offer 14 full scholarships a year and there are 32 women on the team.

December 11, 2014 meeting notes
We had 15 members and 3 guests; our speaker had to cancel at the last minute. We recognized two birthdays and Fred won the 50/50.
Margie noted that the membership drive will continue into January.
Candy sale: Jeri said we collected about $1157 in the two day sale at Cheney Trading Company. She and Dave will sell candy at a small craft fair on Dec. 13 at the Cheney Library.
Rande confirmed that he has a January 8 speaker and asked for other speaker ideas from the club.
Tom reported that the Division has a fund to help clubs.
Tony noted that 5 members attended the East Spokane Christmas Breakfast fundraiser for Camps for Kids.
The sign up sheet for a January 9 holiday party was passed around. We have a total of about 20 members and spouses who plan to attend. There will be a white elephant gift exchange; items should not exceed $10-15 in value. Location will be determined. We discussed the possibility of meeting at Gatto's, the Holiday Inn express and at the Wren Pierson building. There may be room fees and alcohol restrictions at some of these.

Kiwanis Club of Cheney - November 20, 2014 meeting notes
The meeting was called to order just before 7am by President Tom Whitfield. There were 19 members plus 12 guests. Our guests included 6 potential members as well as 6 people who spoke to the club.
1. Theresa, from East Spokane and our Lt. Gov. elect, spoke about Paint-a-Helmet and their club's theatre fundraiser for it.
2. Tony Blount, with Boots and Spurs and Stars and Stripes spoke about their December 7 fundraiser and had signed EWU football and basketball on display. These will be auctioned off at the December 7 event.
3. Troy Hewett, assistant principal at Cheney High School presented the outstanding students for November: Mackenzie Norman and Matt Peterson. Mackenzie is a sophomore who just took first at the state 2A swimming championship in the 100 yard freestyle. She told us that the Cheney girls team placed 10th overall and all three relay teams placed within the top 11. Matt participates in the marching band which placed 2nd overall in a statewide competition for high schools of all sizes. He said that having new band equipment this year allowed the band to perform its best. He is a senior who plans to attend EWU and wants to get a Masters in music.
4. Our main speaker was Jim Fitzgerald, the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics at EWU. He told us about the study hall program for athletes: coaches can assign athletes to study hall or athletes can drop in on their own. EWU athletes have a 3.3 overall GPA and a 75% graduation rate; both are higher than average. EWU places highly in the Big Sky President's Cup which recognizes athletic programs with high levels of GPA, community service and wins.
5. The last speaker was Sally Shamp with Cheney Outreach who sang to us about Christmas Gifts for Cheney Kids. Last year close to 200 kids were served and about half were teens. Donation boxes are out in Cheney businesses, the library and at EWU. Cash donations help and can be mailed to PO Box 444 in Cheney. The gift distribution set up will start at 5pm on December 18 at Wren Pierson. Volunteers should call 235-8900 and leave their name and phone.

Kiwanis Club of Cheney - November 13, 2014 meeting notes
The meeting was called to order at 7am by President Tom Whitfield. Attending were 20 members, three guests and our speaker.
We recognized Annemarie Pollard's birthday and Gail Pollard won the 50/50 drawing.
Club business:
1. Margie passed around a thank you from Coats for Kids.
2. Margie reminded us to try to bring guests who might become members. The membership campaign will continue through the first meeting in December.
3. See's candy fundraiser - we will sell at Cheney Trading company on December 6 and 7; still need volunteers for 1-5pm on December 6.
4. Bob attended the district meeting and brought a flyer announcing Paint a Helmet which will be on April 25, 2015 at the Spokane Fairgrounds.
Speaker: Our speaker was Tony Lamanna, director of Inland Northwest Honor Flight. He explained that the first Honor Flight was in 2005 and the national organization now has 130 groups, including one in Alaska. The Inland Northwest group started in 2009 and has made 27 flights.
Honor flight serves veterans (including merchant marines) who were active during any war era whether they were served in a war zone or not. Priority is given to WWII vets and vets with terminal illnesses. Vets who need assistance are accompanied by volunteer guardians. All trip costs are paid by Honor Flight. They take charter flights and the trip usually takes two days. They visit the WWII memorial, the Korean memorial, the Viet Nam wall, Arlington National Cemetery and the Army, Navy and Air Force memorials. There are local groups that see the vets off when they depart and a high school band and other groups welcome them on their return.
He said that many veterans and their families have said the trip is a 'life changing' experience and sometimes helps relieve survivor guilt or nightmares that veterans still experience.
