Kiwanis Club of Cheney Meeting Notes for March 6 2014
Vice President Tom Whitfield opened the meeting at 5:30
pm.
One of our guest speakers, Catherine Nero Lowery, won the
50/50 and graciously donated her share back to the club. The quarter draw was a carry over and the
pelican was on vacation.
Members were reminded about upcoming events: in April we sponsor a room at Ronald McDonald
house by providing a gift basket and we provide the community egg hunt. In May we will fundraise by delivering
flowers at Mother’s Day and in June we will award a $1000 scholarship to a
Cheney graduating senior.
Our guest speakers were Catherine Nero Lowery and Vanessa
Strange from the Cheney Community Library.
It is part of the county library system and provides a wide range of
activities and electronic services in addition to traditional library services.
Children’s
programs are offered for infant through school age children and incorporate age
appropriate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) components. Infant through preschool activities focus on
early learning, preparing children for school and giving training for
caregivers. Programs for older kids
include hands on learning such as marshmallow engineering and marble
rollercoaster building where kids learn science concepts and then use
them. Children’s programs are offered
year round.
The library also provides
electronic services such as: downloadable
books; Hoopla (streaming music, TV and
movies); job seeking sources including resume building and career
resources; Pronunciator for learning languages and Microsoft IT
Academy for free online technology learning and certification in Microsoft
software.
There is also a community room that
is free to use and is available even when the library isn’t open.
The library partners with
organizations such as Cheney School district, West Plains Chamber of Commerce
and Cheney festival organizers to provide activities and services to a wide
range of people.
The next Kiwanis meeting is March 13 at 7am.
Respectfully,
